Chicago's CORE Reformers Win

“The Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) won Friday's election to lead the Chicago Teachers Union. The CTU's new President Karen Lewis garnered 60 percent of the vote against an incumbent whose caucus has controlled the third largest Teachers (AFT) local in the country for 37 of the last 40 years” reports Paul Abowd in Labor Notes. At minimum, CORE’s victory reflects the rising combatively among education workers, confronted with increasing assaults on public education. If the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) engages in class struggle action it'll be over the head of the new CORE leadership, which has renounced strike action. According to the Chicago Reader, CORE member and new CTU president, "Lewis isn't calling for strikes". A statement CORE proudly reproduces on its website.
