Mao Zedong proclaims People's Republic of China (1949)

Naming himself head of state, Mao Zedong officially proclaims the existence of the People's Republic of China with Zhou Enlai as premier on October 1, 1949. The proclamation of the PRC was a defeat for the regime of the reactionary nationalist Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek who had been supported with money and arms from the American government.

The United States withheld recognition from the new government in China and continued U.S. support of Chiang's Republic of China, which had been established on the island of Taiwan since their defeat in 1949.
