Indian police have shot dead 12 student protestors



Indian police and paramilitary soldiers have shot dead 12 protesters during student demonstrations in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya according to BBC News. Protest leaders all say that the police opened fire without provocation..

Meghalaya's Home Minister, Mukul Sangma, has imposed an indefinite curfew and the army has been called in. The demonstration which drew hundreds was initiated by the Garo Students Union (GSU) and the Garo Citizens' Committee in response to state proposed educational reforms that have created divisions with the Khasi tribe.
